Two terms trending in the TV market these days are QLED and OLED. Both are related to a TV’s video quality.

Compared to the common LED TVs, QLED TV definitely has superior visuals.

A QLED vs. OLED comparison, however, is not so simple.

Here’s a short summary:

Do you want a TV for a brightly-lit room, that will give you lesser cause for concern, and go lighter on your pocket?

Then QLED TV is your answer.

QLED TVs have brighter displays, longer life-spans, no burn-in issues, and affordable price tags over OLED TVs.

The same applies when QLED is compared to a regular LED TV. Except for one factor— ‘price’.

Most LED TVs are cheaper than QLED TVs.

So, does that mean you must give up on QLED just because it’s expensive? No, not at all!

Launched in 2019, the OnePlus (55Q1IN-1) breaks the norm to bring you a budget-friendly QLED TV with a 55-inch large screen!

With this TV, you can now enjoy 4K Ultra HD visuals on a QLED screen.

Every feature you get with this OnePlus TV is designed to amplify your viewing experience.

A 50 W powerful audio, Android smart features, dual control from both remote and Smartphone App. All of these features make this OnePlus TV a great catch!

However, this TV does have its limitations.

It can only be wall-mounted. Or the stand must be bought separately.

(TV stand is available only in the OnePlus Pro series which is more expensive)

Since it is an Android-based smart TV, the App collection in the App Store is not as extensive as Google Play Store.

(For this, software updates are released regularly, to add popular Apps, and so on).

This OnePlus is hands-down the best budget 55-inch QLED (4K) TV in India!

What this means is you get an easy to understand user interface with a ton of content options to explore!

The App Store gives you a choice among ready-to-download trending Apps like YouTube, Hotstar, Prime video and many more.

The smart remote lets you browse, control, and navigate the TV among other things.

Or use the Google Assist (similar to Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana) to give voice commands like ‘Open Voot’ or ask ‘Will it rain today?’

This Google Assist feature is available only in Android version 8.0 and up. (This TV’s OS is based on Android 9.0 version).

Along with these advanced smart features, you also get common features like screen casting, Bluetooth, smart remote and so on.

The TV’s 20 W audio is good enough but could have been better.

If you’re used to louder audio in your old TV, pair this Mi TV with the best 2.1 speakers in India. And complete your entertainment set-up!

Its hard to find a TV that has great features, smart design, and a budget price, all bundled together!

In fact, this particular TV from Xiaomi is the only one that offers 4K Ultra HD visuals in its TV line-up.

4K Ultra HD TVs— Buying Guide

  • What exactly are 4K TVs?

Have you heard of Resolution before?

Not the futile resolutions we make every New Year, but the pixel one?

If you haven’t, then keep reading. Or skip the next paragraph.

The images we see on TV are made up of lakhs of tiny dots crammed together called pixels.

These pixels make up the different colours and contrasts we see on the screen.

And 'resolution', is the total number of pixels a TV screen can show.

More the number of pixels, the higher is the TV’s resolution which translates into stunning video quality.

The Resolution of a screen is specified in the following format– (total number of pixels aligned horizontally) x (total number of pixels aligned vertically).

So, a screen with 3840x2160p Resolution contains a total of 8,294,400 pixels.

Such a screen is commonly referred to as 4K (as it is 4 times the preceding Resolution of 1080p) or Ultra High Definition– 2 notches above the start of High Definition (720p).

Most commonly available Resolutions are as follows:

1280x768p or simply 720p = High Definition (HD) or HD Ready

1920x1080p or just 1080p = Full HD

3840x2160p = 4K = Ultra HD or UHD

4K TVs aren’t just numerically superior to other Resolutions, the colour reproduction, contrast, and clarity are also greater and better.

In simple terms, it helps TV in serving its purpose– replicating natural colours, shades, and images; better than other lower Resolutions.

This rtings article aptly covers the 4K vs. full HD debate.

How smart are 4K TVs?

Even the world of TVs is unclear about what a smart TV really is— and that is where the problem lies!

Essentially any TV which can be connected to the internet via a LAN cable or Wi-Fi is a smart TV.

But every smart TV differs in its level of smartness.

(The TV industry, however, doesn’t specify any such levels).

Some TVs offer very few ‘smart’ features while some are loaded with ‘smartness.’

Since most 4K TVs are smart, it becomes necessary to understand the different levels of smartness in a TV to make an informed decision.

To make things simple I’ve made two categories to understand ‘how smart’ a TV really is.

Basic smart TV

Most of the smart TVs falling in the lower price range are basic smart.

In addition to offering all the features of a standard TV, basic smart TVs can be connected to the internet via a LAN cable or Wi-Fi. Basic smart TVs are characterized by two main smart features:

  • More Content:

On connecting to the internet, basic smart TVs let you access a bunch of inbuilt Apps and games.

The number and type of Apps depend on the TV’s brand and Operating system but usually include all the trending Apps like Netflix, YouTube, Hotstar, Facebook, Twitter and so on.

Some TVs even come with browsers for web surfing.

For more content options, you also get an AppStore which gives you select choices to download and watch.

And here lies the catch.

If you are expecting a range of options like the Google PlayStore, then go for an Android smart TV.

Non-Android (basic smart) TVs have limited downloadable options.

  • Screen Mirroring

Screen mirroring lets you display your phone, Laptop, or tablet screen on the TV, wirelessly.

You can thus play your ‘workout playlist’ as you do Yoga or stream your wedding photos for a little trip down memory lane.

You can also access various supported Apps and games to enjoy content on the big screen.

Or you can mirror your laptop and use the TV as your laptop screen to work without straining your eyes.

Advanced smart TV

These TVs are a class apart. They truly are premium products.

These, offer everything basic smart ones offer and so much more!

Notable features of advanced smart TVs include:

  • Even More Content

The new Android-based and Certified (Official) Android TVs, offer content options similar to those of your Android Smartphones. However, there is a significant difference between Android-based and Google-certified Android TVs.

Android-based TVs are cheaper.

This is because the Operating Systems of these TVs are based on Android OS.

So, it may look and work in a similar way to Android but is not the Official version we see in Android Smartphones or Android TVs.

The Apps you get are also limited.

And Artificial intelligence algorithms (for personalized suggestions etc.) are also not as efficient as Google Android.

This makes Google-certified Android TVs truly excellent products and a must-buy if want the best smart features.

  • Smart Remote

The smartness of a TV remote also varies like the smartness of a TV.

Basic smart remotes come with dedicated buttons to popular Apps like Netflix and YouTube.

A smarter remote comes with an IR blaster, which lets you control the TV, set-top box, and speakers.

It may also come with a QWERTY keyboard (for ease of typing) or a scroll button (working as an air mouse).

The most advanced smart remotes are those that receive voice commands to control and navigate the TV.

  • Bluetooth

Bluetooth is another feature found in advanced smart TVs or some basic smart ones.

With it, you can connect an external sound system or soundbar wirelessly to the TV or even a set of headphones.

This reduces the number of messy cables around the TV and also simplifies audio connectivity.

  • Voice-activated control

Developments in Artificial intelligence are disrupting various industries including the Television industry. And everyone is loving it!

With advanced smart TVs backed by Google-certified Android (Sanyo) and ThinQ AI (LG) technology, a new era in the TV industry has begun— of voice commands and search!

You can now speak into the remote instructions like, ‘Open browser’, ‘go to StarPlus’ or search queries like ‘Suggest me some romantic comedy movies’ and the TV will obey.

Such TVs initially came with a hefty price tag (from premium brands like Sony, Samsung, and LG).

But not anymore.

Brands like Sanyo, TCL, Xaiomi, Micromax, and so on, have made Android TVs, especially the Certified ones, more affordable.

If you’re looking for the latest and the best TV then these are worth every Rupee!

Due to the lack of an official distinction between the smartness of a TV, you may find some advanced smart features (like smart remote, Bluetooth) available in basic smart TVs.

However, the really advanced features like voice commands, air mouse smart remote, etc. are exclusive to advanced smart TVs.

Note the term 'basic smart' and 'advanced smart' is something I came up with to better understand and explain the levels of smartness. (These are not official terms).

What do you need for the best 4K experience?

Simply getting a 4K TV isn’t enough. To unleash its full potential, 4K TV needs a few sidekicks of its own:

  1. 4K content

The majority of the TV serials and shows in India, are available in full HD (1080p) Resolution.

(This is lower than 4K resolution of 2160p).

What do you think will happen if you play lower resolution movies (1080p) on a higher resolution TV (4K)?

The Upscaler technology in 4K TVs improves the lower resolution videos to bring them closer to 4K quality.

In the absence of an upscaler, you will see the movie in the resolution it was shot in.

But when you’re paying for a 2160p resolution TV why should you settle for anything lower?

Instead, make sure you get a set-top box that has UHD channels e.g. TataSky 4K DTH, Airtel 4K DTH, or Videocon 4K DTH.

Currently, in India the number of 4K channels offered by these providers is limited. But the numbers will only go up with time.

Alternatively, you can access 4K content on Netflix, YouTube, and other similar online content providers.

This is why 4K TVs are usually smart ones so that you can access 4K content without having to pay for an extra set-top box.

But for seamless streaming, you need the next 4K requirement below.

  1. Internet Speed

Fast internet speed is the lifeline for uninterrupted 4K experience and thus a must-have if you’re looking to buy one.

Netflix recommends a minimum internet speed of 25mbps to enjoy lag-free 4K content.

It doesn’t mean that anything slower and the videos won’t work. You can still watch upscaled full HD videos on your 4K TV with a slower connection.

But to get your full money’s worth, good internet speed is critical.

  1. Larger screen size

You’ve gathered everything– the 4K TV, 4K content and an internet speed that’s ready for a marathon, but there’s still something missing.

A smaller TV screen size won’t do justice to the 4K visuals.

Not because of any fault in the TV but because our eyes cannot detect the improvement in image quality in smaller screen sizes.

Although 43-inch is a good start to buy 4K TVs, the higher you go, the more immersive your experience will be!

This is also why you will find many 4K advocates recommending 55” and 65” as the ideal screen size to watch 4K content on.

Do you really need a 4K TV?

If you’re renovating the house for a new and different look, then no, you don’t need a 4K TV or any TV.

But if it’s your old TV you want to replace or you’re already looking to buy a new TV then 4K is the way to go.

Why? You ask?

Well, we buy consumer electronics like Television hoping they would last us a lifetime.

Hence, we search for feature-rich TVs and reliable brands that won’t abandon us after we’re done paying.

4K TVs offer the best resolution and also future-proof your TV!

So why not buy the best while you’re at it?

Also, you don’t want to be stuck with a lower resolution TV while all your friends and neighbours show-off their 4K TVs within a few years. Now, isn’t that a good enough excuse?

Buying online vs. offline

Unlike buying stationery or books, TV is a significant and costly purchase.

And as consumers, we all want the best deal in terms of price and exchange offer.

So WHERE should you buy your new TV from, to ensure you get the best price, better variety and not feel cheated after making the purchase? — online or offline?

For this, you need to consider just three things:

  1. Delivery
  2. After-sales service (i.e. installation and future repairs)
  3. And Exchange of your old TV

  1. Delivery

Many consumers misunderstand the seller’s role.

The job of any seller whether online or offline is only to SELL and DELIVER the new TV.

Installation and repairs are NOT the seller’s responsibilities.

Keeping this in mind, if you want your new TV to be delivered within the next 24 hours, going to your nearest electronics store is a better option.

However, if you’re willing to wait, then buying online will give you so many more options and deals to choose from!

When buying from Amazon, you can also select your preferred delivery slot, so your TV reaches you when you’re free to receive it.

You can also return or replace the TV if you find any issues with the delivered one.

  1. After-sales service

Once the TV is delivered, the seller’s job ends.

To get the TV installed, you have to contact the customer care center of the TV Company.

You can schedule a suitable time to get your TV installed by contacting customer care. (When you buy offline, generally the retail store executives make that call for you).

Similarly, for repairs, it is the customer care you need to call and not the seller.

This is why the brand of the TV becomes important, as the quality of the after-sales service depends on it.

  1. Exchange of old TV

Buying a new TV almost always means discarding an old one.

But wouldn’t it be better if you could scrape some value out of it?

Both online and offline sellers, let you get rid of your old TV with a small discount on the price of the new one.

When buying on Amazon, you’re asked for the brand, screen size, and condition of your old TV.

You’re then given a discount that you can avail of on your new TV.

The exchange procedure is simple.

If you’ve opted for the exchange, the old TV gets picked up during the delivery of the new one. Convenient and transparent.

Another point to note is that salesmen in retail electronics stores get a high commission on certain products.

And hence they may aggressively ‘push’ those products on you. Don’t fall for it!

In conclusion, if you’re in a hurry then buying a TV from your nearest electronics store is the best option.

But if you want more variety, more offers and a good exchange rate for your old TV, buying online is the way to go.

All from the comfort of your home!

  • Bank offers and No cost EMI

Many Banks give discounts or cashback offers on their debit and credit cards that you can avail to get your new 4K Smart TV for an even lower price!

The discount or cashback is usually a small percentage of the TV’s cost and is a good way to get your TV at a sweet price.

But if your budget is limited and you want to expand your choices, then you can opt for the ‘No cost EMI’ option.

With 'No cost EMI', you won’t have to pay the TV’s price upfront.

You can instead pay in small monthly installments.

The advantage of this facility is, instead of settling for a smaller or cheaper TV, you can buy the TV of your choice without spending a lump-sum amount at one go.

How awesome is that!
